AI Didn't Replace the Engineer. It Replaced the Prep Work.

I get a version of the same question from principals at civil and environmental engineering firms. Is AI going to replace my engineers?

Sometimes it comes from a PE who has been stamping plans for twenty years and is genuinely worried. Sometimes it comes from a younger principal who watched a junior staff member paste a spec sheet into a chat window and get a serviceable draft in ninety seconds. The question is honest, but aimed at the wrong part of the work.

Based on the workflows I see, AI is not replacing the civil engineer. It is replacing assembly work that happens before the civil engineer can start.

The six weeks nobody talks about

A real stormwater project does not begin with a PE sitting down to size a detention basin. It begins with someone pulling SSURGO soils for the parcel, grabbing NLCD land cover, looking up NOAA Atlas 14 precipitation frequencies for the county, assembling a site GIS from half a dozen layers, and reformatting all of it into the input format HydroCAD, SewerGEMS, or Civil 3D expects.

None of that is engineering judgment. All of it has to happen before engineering judgment can be applied.

That assembly phase is where the hours go. A mid-level engineer who can build a hydrology model in their sleep can lose an afternoon reformatting a spreadsheet so the model will accept it, cross-checking one export against another because two systems do not talk to each other, and reconciling a pipe network against a stormwater ordinance PDF. By the time the actual modeling starts, half the day is gone and none of it required an engineering degree.

Dan Cumberland, writing at Dan Cumberland Labs, makes the same argument: AI will not replace civil engineers in the next five to ten years because professional engineers must legally sign off on designs and take personal liability for safety and code compliance. What AI does replace, in his list, is repetitive loop work: permit research and regulatory extraction, site plan sketches and initial layouts, schedule optimization and sequencing, cost estimation and budget forecasting, and documentation and specifications. His framing is direct. AI assists engineering judgment. It does not replace it.

The split that matters

The useful question is smaller than “will AI replace me.” Which part of my week is assembly, and which part is judgment?

Assembly is pull, reformat, cross-check, copy, paste, reconcile. It has a known correct answer. A drainage-area summary either matches the source parcel data or it does not. An ordinance criterion either traces back to a page in the PDF or it does not. That verifiability is what makes assembly safe to automate. A pipeline can get it right or flag that it could not, instead of guessing.

Judgment is the design storm, the BMP selection, where the detention goes, whether the assumed infiltration rate is defensible given the soils under the site, and whether the model output is something a PE is willing to stamp. That part stays with the engineer because the engineer is the one whose license is on the line.

Firms that get this split right stop treating AI as a threat and start treating it as a way to remove low-judgment friction from high-judgment work. The first candidate is usually sitting in the weekly complaint. Whatever senior staff groan about, the task that eats two or three hours and that everyone already does roughly the same way, is the workflow to inspect first.

Build the input, the check, and the owner for that task. Ship a narrow version. Watch what breaks. Then decide whether the next workflow is worth the same treatment.

What changes for the PE

When assembly is automated, the engineer’s day looks different. Six hours of reformatting can become thirty minutes of review: checking the flagged items, spot-checking the rest, and deciding whether the draft is ready to go into the model.

The judgment part, the part the firm actually charges for and the PE actually stamps, gets more of the day than it had before.

That is the trade I keep describing to principals who ask the replacement question. Not “AI runs your model,” which no licensed engineer should accept. It is “AI drafts the tedious part of the input and shows its work, so your judgment goes toward the actual engineering problem instead of toward reformatting a CSV.”
